A long-lost oil painting by Sir Peter Paul Rubens, one of the greatest Baroque artists, has been discovered in a private apartment in Paris, auction house Osenat announced today. Completed in 1613 during Rubens’ peak creative period, the religious-themed work was hidden for nearly 400 years.

The masterpiece was uncovered by Jean-Pierre Osenat while clearing a property in Paris’ 6th arrondissement. After rigorous authentication—including X-ray scanning and pigment analysis by leading art historian Dr. Nils Büttner—the work was confirmed as an original Rubens.

“This is an extraordinary discovery,” Osenat said. “The painting is in pristine condition, a rare surviving example of Rubens’ private commissions from his golden age.” The work is set to be auctioned on November 30, 2025, with an estimated value of €3–5 million
